Hey LIX Chicks,

I have a jam-packed e-news for you this month gals! Thirty-four listings in our Upcoming Events of Interest, reports on two five-minute infomercials from the June networking meeting (which was packed to the rafters, by the way) and an introduction to the two new members of the LIX Steering Committee. And by the way, we now have 322 LIX Chicks in our membership...we signed up seven new members at the June 5th meeting! Are we the hottest lesbian group in town or what? And speaking of hot dykes, tickets for Proud Chicks Dance Party 4 will be on sale at our July networking meeting before they go on sale to the public (see Upcoming Event of Interest #24).

For those of you who weren't at the networking meeting in May, I am pleased to announce that we have added two fabulous dykes to the LIX Steering Committee. Lucy, Kerry and I are thrilled to welcome Catherine Purdie and Sinéad Bomba to the crew! Catherine and Sinéad introduced themselves to the crowd in May but for those of you who couldn't make it to Swizzles, I asked our two newest Steering Committee members to write up a little something for this issue of the e-news.

Here's what Catherine has to say about herself: "I consider myself to be a positive person who loves change and taking risks. I wasn’t always like this and before coming out I was riskadverse and ultra conservative. I refer to myself as a 'grass roots, low key influencer' and given a choice between marching on Parliament Hill for LGBT rights and making a speech to 200 church congregation members, I would go for the latter and use the opportunity to influence the grassroots public that LGBT people have a lot to offer society. Before retiring in October 2007, I worked in senior management at a financial institution in Ottawa where I developed a strong background in technology, and as a senior management leader in my company, took pride in developing many other leaders and leading large projects."

"I have been involved in several LGBT and non-LGBT organizations in the Ottawa area…

  • Executive secretary and web mistress for Gender Mosaic, Canada’s oldest transgender support group
  • Member of the Board of Directors and volunteer for the Lanark County Interval House
  • Part time facilitator of PFLAG Ottawa meetings
  • Speaker on transgender issues (eg., Ottawa University medical students, high‑school students, 2007 Ottawa TDOR event, Unitarian congregation, numerous outreach events, psychology students at University of Ottawa and Algonquin College, women’s’ shelter executive directors and staff)
  • Ottawa member of the Community Engagement Team for Ontario’s TransPULSE project
  • 2007 and 2008 Capital PRIDE photographer."

"I discovered LIX in early July 2007 and after attending my first meeting in August, I quickly discovered that LIX offers a friendly and supportive environment for the Ottawa lesbian community. I am honoured to be a member of the LIX Steering Committee and I'm looking forward to promoting the organization and supporting the various LIX events."

And Sinéad introduces herself to you as follows: "I've been coming to LIX since June 2006 when the meetings were held in the Wellington Street Bridgehead and I've volunteered at various LIX events since that time. I'm proud to say that I'm an award-winning woodturner...I have been 'Spinning Madly...turning fallen wood into art' for over ten years. I create functional and artistic pieces from trees that have been cut down because of disease, age, landscaping or storm damage. My pieces can be seen on my website www.SpinningMadly.com or in person at Detour Gallery (117 Murray St.) www.DetourGallery.ca. Last month, I was featured on CTV Ottawa's Regional Contact and I've given two 5-minute infomercials at LIX networking meetings. I was the librarian and Secretary of the Valley Woodturners for several years."

"I wanted to join the Steering Committee for several reasons...the main one being to have the opportunity to work with, and learn from, the incredible women who founded LIX. LIX has been a wonderful social and business resource for me, and I want to contribute my ideas and energy to its future direction."

Welcome aboard Catherine and Sinéad! I look forward to passing on the brunt of the LIX work to you...just kidding! But I do look forward to the fresh ideas, energy and talents that I know both of you will bring to the Steering Committee.

At this month's LIX networking meeting on June 5th, we had two five-minute infomercials. First up was Anne who talked about Women For Sobriety (WFS) a recovery program for women dealing with alcoholism and other addictions. WFS was created in 1975 by Dr. Jean Kirkpatrick who was herself a recovering alcoholic...armed with her own recovery and an instinctive knowledge that women alcoholics had special needs that must be met in order to have lasting sobriety, Dr. Kirkpatrick set about establishing the first self-help organization for women alcoholics. WFS is an abstinence program offering weekly confidential group meetings for women. Instead of 12 'steps', WFS uses 13 'statements'...for example, 'I am a competent woman and have much to give life'; "I have a life-threatening problem that once had me" and my favourite "Life can be ordinary or it can be great".

Anne is herself in recovery and had tried Alcoholics Anonymous in the past. One night at a 12-step meeting, Anne took the courageous step to talk about the sexual abuse that she had suffered...only to be told by the men at the meeting that her abuse was an 'outside issue' not to be brought to the tables of AA. Anne told us that, at that moment, she had felt violated all over again. She knew that she had to find a different recovery program where she could talk freely about her issues. And that's when she discovered the Women For Sobriety program. Today, Anne is the moderator of the Ottawa WFS group. The group meets every Sunday from 7:00 -8:15 at 1390 Prince of Wales Drive, Suite 406. For more information about WFS, call (613) 220-3588 or email w.f.s.in.ottawa@gmail.com.  You can also find out more by going to the web site at www.womenforsobriety.org.

Our second five-minute infomercial was presented by Melanie and Aida, the two dykes who have been facilitating Women's Night at Pink Triangle Services (PTS) for the last four years. The group meets on the second Thursday of every month at the PTS offices at 251 Bank Street, Suite 301 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Women's Night was formed to provide a safe and supportive space for women to gather and interact with each other. At the meetings, women discuss topics that have been selected by the participants and sometimes a guest speaker is invited.

Aida also told us about their upcoming 3rd Annual Picnic in the Park on June 22nd. Anyone who identifies as a woman is welcome. Food and beverages will be supplied by PTS for free but financial donations are encouraged. Both Melanie and Aida talked about the dire financial situation that PTS is in right now and urged us to attend the PTS Gala & Fundraiser on June 12th at Tabaret Hall. (see Upcoming Event #5 for details). Pink Triangle Services was founded in 1984 by a group of dedicated gay and lesbian volunteers. The organization is a non-profit, registered charity and social service agency providing peer support, educational, research and advocacy services for LGBTTQ people. There are currently over ten different groups holding their meetings at the office...groups like Pink Triangle Youth, a Bi Women's Group, a Secular Addiction recovery group...to name only a few. PTS also houses the Dr. Kelly McGinnis Library...Canada's largest LGBTTQ lending library. PTS currently has two paid staff and over 100 volunteers who do an amazing job of providing services for the Ottawa community.

Before I sign off, I just want to tell all our new members, and remind the rest of you, that if you're interested in joining the LIX Facebook group, you need to:

  1. become a Facebook member by going to www.facebook.com
  2. then send an email to me at info@girlswanttoknow.com requesting to be added to the LIX Facebook group
  3. if you run into any trouble, contact our LIX Facebook guru, Deanne, at deannef@gmail.com.

So my dears...I hope you're all enjoying summer now that it's finally here. Ottawa may well be a challenging place to be living during the winter months but summers here are truly outstanding. The number of festivals, art exhibits, and events taking place is incredible! Talk to you next month...

We encourage you to send us news of events and/or workshops that you are involved in so we can add the information to our Upcoming Events of Interest section of this monthly news update. We need to know the who's, what's, where's as well as cost, where tickets are available, if pre-registration is required, and if it's a fundraiser, what organization you're raising funds for. If the organization has a web site, that web address would be helpful. And we'd love to see more of your entries in the Special Interest Groups and Activities, the LIX Chicks Want Ads, and the LIX Chicks Tips.  Networking works...for information, business and pleasure!  Send your news and ideas to me at info@girlswanttoknow.com.  We need your information by the end of the month in order to guarantee inclusion in the following month's issue.

So...there you go!  For more information about the LIX network, check out our web site at www.girlswanttoknow.com, send us an email at info@girlswanttoknow.com or chat with one of us at a networking meeting at Swizzles.

Cheers,
Marie Robertson
