Hey LIX Chicks,

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and my spirits are lifting!  I never thought I'd be so happy to see our basement flooding!  Spring is here...let that snow melt...I really don't mind wearing my 'wellies' while I'm doing laundry.  It's a small price to pay to see the end of winter.

And speaking of perking up spirits, I haven't told you about the fabulous evening we had at this year's LIX dinner/speaker meeting at The Pantry on March 13th.  As I don't want to make those of you who couldn't get tickets feel too bad, suffice it to say that the food was fabulous and we were absolutely thrilled to have the butchly and talented writer/storyteller, Ivan Coyote, as our guest speaker.  Did she have the audience eating out of the palm of her hand?  Is Jodie Foster a dyke?

One of the most amazing things about listening to Ivan 'read' is that she doesn't read...she TELLS you the stories from memory.  So every time is like the first time...fresh, vibrant, funny and heart-warming.  Ivan talks about real people...real people like the little girl, Olivia, who wore cords and striped T-shirts and who everyone thought was a boy (including Ivan).  Real people like the God-fearing Christian guy who met Ivan on an airplane, mistook her for a young man, talked her ear off for ages and ended up saying that he hoped his daughter would someday meet a nice, clean-cut guy like Ivan.

Carleton University has wisely decided to keep Ivan here in Ottawa past the end of her writer-in-residence contract.  She will be teaching a course at Carleton in the fall and the great news is: Ivan has decided to offer writing workshops to the Ottawa community this summer!  She started taking names at the LIX dinner and almost filled two classes right there and then.  I spoke with Ivan this past weekend and she told me that the classes are going to be held at mother tongue books.  If you're interested in taking a writing class with Ivan, you can contact her at coyote3@telus.net.  [click on this link for more images]

And now on to this month's networking meeting.  Well...I'll tell you, ever since we started encouraging women to tell more about themselves during the one-minute go-round, the flavour of the monthly meeting has improved 100%.  Who knew that among us we have: a woman who flies planes, a landscape painter who enjoys watching rivers flood in the spring, a tap-dancer, two gals who met at a LIX meeting last year and who are now getting married, a pool shark, and the developer of an upcoming new queer web site called Dorothy's Closet (LIX members will be the first to hear about it when it goes live!).

In this month's five-minute infomercial spot, we were pleased to welcome realtor, Kerstin Munk, who is a sales representative with Royal Lepage Realty.  Whether you're buying or selling a home, Kerstin talked about the importance of choosing a realtor who you feel will truly focus on your needs and concerns.  These days, many buyers check out the MLS listings on-line looking for homes.  Kerstin pointed out that MLS listings are only a guide and don't include all homes on the market.  Also, that calling the listing agent on a property that you see on-line is not necessarily the best idea.  The listing agent is working for the seller and is, therefore, going to try and get the most money for them.  Having your own buying agent will give you the benefit of having someone at your service who will, not only, actively search for a fabulous home for you but also negotiate a fair price for you based on their experience and expertise.   Kerstin would rather work with a smaller number of clients so that she can ensure top-quality service.  She is also more than happy to answer any questions even if you're not quite ready to sell or buy a home at the moment.  You can reach Kerstin on her direct line at (613) 222-5031 or by email at kmunk@royallepage.ca.

Our next monthly networking meeting will be held on May 1st.  So far, both five-minute infomercial spots are open so if you'd like to grab one of them and showcase your business, or a volunteer organization where you contribute your time and talent, or an interest or hobby that you think women would like to hear about, please contact Lucy at info@girlswanttoknow.com

This week, we passed the 300 mark on the LIX membership list...we now officially have 305 LIX Chicks and 50 members who have joined the LIX Facebook page.  And speaking of the LIX Facebook page, our members are definitely beginning to use the site as a way of communicating with each other.  I encourage you to join us.  Add photos, participate in the discussion board, post an item, add a video, invite women to join you for an impromptu night of bowling...or a walk or a movie.  For detailed information on how to join the LIX Facebook group, go to the LIX web site (www.girlswanttoknow.com) and check the March 2008 e-news, or send an email to Deanne Fountaine at deannef@gmail.com.

We have some new Want Ads this month and a useful LIX Chick Tip from yours truly.  Enjoy the e-news and I hope to see many of you at The Foolish Chicken on Wednesday, April 23rd for 'A Taste For Life'.  If you're not already booked somewhere else and you'd like to join the LIX Chicks at the 'Chicken', call (613) 321-4715 and reserve your seat...tell them that you want to be upstairs with LIX.  And if you're going to another 'A Taste For Life' venue that night, I hope you have a lovely dinner...thank you for supporting people with HIV/AIDS in Ottawa.  For more information on 'A Taste For Life', check out Upcoming Events of Interest, event #5.  Talk to you later.....

LIX Chicks Tips

Tired of the lingering smell of garlic or onions on your hands after food preparation? Suffer no longer sisters!  For the cost of a latté, you can purchase a small oval shaped piece of stainless steel that miraculously takes away odours when you rub your hands with it.  I've had one for many years and it still works perfectly.  They are available in kitchen-wear stores and often called Stainless Steel Odour Removers (quelle surprise).  I dragged out the yellow-pages and did some research for you...odour-removers are in stock at Grace in the Kitchen at 1165 Bank Street and at J D Adam Kitchen at 795 Bank Street...for $4.95.  You can also get one at Ma Cuisine at 269 Dalhousie, in the Byward Market, for $6.95 (I guess they're made from 'trendier' stainless steel or something...please!).  Don't ask me how it works; all I know is that it does!  It's a bloody miracle product!  Your friends, and especially your lovers, will thank you.  (submitted by Marie R.)
